12 Tips to Growing A Business On Social Media

By: Amy Rayanne Harmon

How I arrived here with the desire to grow my Business on Social Media

Looking back over the last twenty years, I'm struck by the journey my photography business took me on.

Memories flood in, along with a persistent thought: "What if social media had been around then?"

Two decades ago, I started my photography business with a focus on capturing special moments.

Back then, I relied on word-of-mouth and traditional methods to spread the word about my work.

As I flip through old albums, I remember those early days of photographing weddings, graduations, and family gatherings.

Each click of the camera was filled with purpose. However, I often wished for a way to share my work with a broader audience.

I imagined there had to be some way to showcase my portfolio, a place where I could share stories with my potential clients, and even creating tutorials. The idea of reaching a wider audience and connecting directly with potential clients was appealing.

But the past was about more than missed opportunities. It was a time of hard work, learning, and adapting. I remember promoting my business at local events and networking with fellow photographers.

As the years went on, my business grew through word-of-mouth, repeat clients, and dedication to my craft.

Looking back, I'm proud of what I've accomplished. And while social media would have been helpful, there's something timeless about the connections forged through traditional methods.

To aspiring photographers, business owners and entrepreneurs today, I offer this advice: Embrace the opportunities social media provides.

Create an online presence, engage with your audience, and let your passion shine. The journey may be different now, but the essence of capturing moments and sharing stories remains the same.

1. Pick the Right Social Media Platform

There are so many choices when it comes to the best places to interreact with your potential customers.

Picking the right platform is the 1st step in meeting your customers where they hang out online. You want to show up where the people are spending their time.

2. Don’t Put Your Eggs All In One Basket

It's best to spread your social media reach as broadly as possible.

This means you should take advantage of more than one platform.

3. Use Free Options Along with Paid Ads

All platforms have paid options as well as free options.

Want to learn what these are?

4. Talk to Your Followers Like Friends

People go on social media to be social. They are there to interact with their friends and learn about their lives.

Generally speaking, people don't go on social media to buy things. The art of selling on social media is simply to be social.

If you are interacting with people, be a real person.

5. Every Post Should Not Be a Sales Post

Most business owners think they need to post every day selling their products or services.

Since the platforms we are working on are social, we need to be social while we're there.

6. Don't Give Up Too Soon

In society today we are all used to instant gratification. If we don't see results immediately, we tend to assume what we’re doing is not working.

7. Be Consistent

Posting on your pages can sometimes feel overwhelming.

I know I’m guilty myself of letting my page go for too long without new content. Life gets busy and time passes fast.

8. Reply to Comments and Block/Hide Bad Comments

Once you get your posts out there, you are likely to get some feedback from your viewers.

Most people are very nice and will click to like or share your post. When you receive good comments, it's nice to reply back and thank them for their kind words.

Many platforms track how you interact with commenters. If you ignore or respond harshly, they take notice.

9. Put Out Good Content

The best way to capture attention is to offer good content.

10. Follow Community Standards

Every platform has rules and regulations. If you follow these guidelines, you are able to stay for a long time.

Whatever platform you choose, go on their site and read what their community standards are.

11. Complete Your Online Profile Thoroughly

Many users will open an account or a business page and fail to complete the initial setup.

12. Collect 5 Star Reviews

Collecting reviews is a powerful tool.

Most people today will read reviews online before making purchasing decisions.
